A few blocks from the Panathenaic Stadium and National Gardens of Athens, centrally positioned to be accessible to all, the B&E Goulandris Foundation has opened its doors, on the wishes of its founders Basil & Elise Goulandris, to share the most important private art collection assembled during the second half of the 20th Century.
Housed in a mid-war building owned by the founders, renovations were undertaken by the Architects I. & A. Vikelas to create an extradorinary space to house over 600 masterpieces of art, statues, objects and thousands of books, across 11 floors (5 being below ground).
On the levels above ground, current pieces exhibited (its rumored there will be changes to the collections on display every year, as Basil & Elise have collected so many pieces they aren’t all on exhibition) include significant pieces from artists such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Piccasso, Braque, Miró and works from modern Greek artists including: Parthenis, Ghika, Tsarouchis, Moralis, Tetsis and others.
Below ground, the museum displays over 6,000 books in its library along with a state of the art auditorium for hosting lectures, screenings, performances, concerts and other artistic or scientific activites. There will also be a host of educational programmes and art classes for children available.
The museum will also merge with the National Museum of Contemporary Art which is set to open its door this February, along with the new National Gallery which will re-open its doors in 2021.
