Minos Beach Art

Crete Island, Greece

Why it made our list: Crete’s original luxury hotel, open since 1963, on a peninsula where the bungalows sit on the rocks and the Aegean is a ladder away. Good luck leaving.

At a Glance

Low-lying whitewashed bungalows and villas are spread along a private peninsula on the edge of Agios Nikolaos. The architecture was designed to sit in conversation with the fishing villages of eastern Crete, and it still does: nothing rises above the treeline, the materials are local stone and wood, and the grounds are threaded with pine, bougainvillea, and an aromatic herb garden you can smell before you see. The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation’s collection of over 55 contemporary artworks turns a walk to breakfast into an accidental gallery visit.

Days here settle into a rhythm you don’t plan. You swim before breakfast, lose an hour wandering the sculpture garden, read on the terrace until the light pulls you back to the water. The property stretches along two KM of coastline, but scale is what makes it feel private: you can walk for twenty minutes through pine, bougainvillea, and aromatic herbs and see nobody but the cats who have claimed the garden paths. Paths between the bungalows open onto the sea at unexpected angles, contemporary sculpture appears between the trees, and the sound of water is ever-present, whether it’s the Aegean below or the fountains threading through the grounds. Agios Nikolaos is close enough for an evening in town. Most people mean to go and don’t.

Our Take: A waterfront art hotel on Crete’s quieter east coast, lush and unhurried, with the sound of the sea never far. Works for couples, families, and anyone who just wants to be near the water all day.

Rooms We Love

Superior Waterfront Bungalow

The sweet spot. Private terrace facing the sea, reserved sun loungers on the rocks below, and your own steps into the water. Earthy interiors, natural wood, and enough space to feel settled rather than squeezed. 40 sqm.

Superior Beachfront Bungalow

Steps from the sand, private terrace, the same design language as the waterfront rooms but oriented toward the beach rather than the rocks. A good option if you prefer sand over swimming off the rocks. 40 sqm.

Two-Bedroom Villa with Private Pool

Split across two floors, which is the detail that makes this work for families with teenagers. Separate bedrooms, a living area, private pool, and an indoor-outdoor feel that means nobody is on top of each other. The villas are set among the gardens with views over the bay.

Dining

Bacchus The main restaurant. Breakfast is an open buffet with live cooking stations, Greek and Cretan produce, and more choice than you’ll manage in a single sitting. In the evening, Bacchus shifts to a dinner menu of Cretan and Greek dishes.

La Bouillabaisse Fine dining, Mediterranean, 30 outdoor seats on the veranda. Chef Kyriakos Mylonas and Poppy Kourkoutaki work with local suppliers and the hotel’s own herb garden. This is the one to book for a special evening.

Terpsis Traditional Cretan, al fresco. Grilled fish, mezedes, the kind of meal that feels like you’ve walked into a village taverna that happens to overlook the Aegean.

Pure Bar Waterfront, daytime. Guests consistently single this out as a favourite: the tuna rice bowl, the unpretentious menu, and the fact that the food is as good as the setting. Not an afterthought.

Adeste Kafeneion Traditional Cretan coffee shop with meze and raki. A coffee here turns into two hours if you let it.
