Kythira, Greece: an effortless summer escape
Kythira remains, for many, an undiscovered part of Greece, quietly positioned at the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese, where the Ionian and Aegean seas meet. It’s the kind of island you don’t arrive at by accident, but once you do, it has a way of staying with you.
According to Greek mythology, Kythira is the birthplace of Aphrodite, and there’s something fitting about that. Not in an obvious, romanticized way, but in the softness of the landscape, the light, the beautiful shimmering waters, and the effortless beauty of the island.
Kythira isn’t about following a set route or visiting highlights. It’s an island where you wake up, see how the day feels, and decide from there. Distances are short, options are plenty, yet nothing feels overwhelming. There’s a subtle mix of Greek island life with Venetian architecture and a hint of Italian flair – spritz in your hand, long evenings, and a crowd that leans toward the understated elegance, those who value culture, authenticity and nature over scene.

Stays in Kythira often lean towards privacy, nature, and a sense of quiet retreat.
For those seeking seclusion, Hidden Retreats Kythera offers a more remote escape, set about 25 minutes from most of the island’s main points. It’s the kind of place where you disconnect almost instantly.
More central located in the heart of the island, Xenonas Fos ke Choros blends traditional architecture with a more intimate, local feel, offering a stay that feels connected to both the landscape and the culture.

Where to swim

into the sea or spend the afternoon swimming before easing into drinks and dinner by
Avlemonas Bay.
Diakofti
Often your first glimpse of the island, with bright turquoise waters and soft sand, the perfect setting for a relaxed beach day.
Kapsali
Lively yet still relaxed, perfect for combining a swim with food & drinks and even some shopping, this is a full day destination.
Kaladi
One of the island’s most striking beaches, with layered rock formations and crystal-clear water. Take in the view from above before making your way down.
Melidoni
A beautiful drive through hills filled with olive trees, arriving at a scenic bay surrounded by rock formations on both sides.
Limnionas, Kaki Lagkada & Komponada
Less structured, more untouched – these are the beaches you go to when you want space and simplicity.
For something different, Avlemonas isn’t a beach in the traditional sense, but a series of natural swimming spots carved into the rocks, where the water feels impossibly clear and the setting almost cinematic.
Days that unfold naturally
Kythira isn’t about planning too much, it’s about settling into a rhythm and letting the day take shape.
Spend a full day in Kapsali, one of the island’s most atmospheric seaside spots. Start slowly with coffee or something sweet at one of the seafront cafés, ease into the day with a swim, maybe paddle out on a SUP board, then settle in for a long seafood lunch. As the afternoon stretches, order a spritz, watch the light shift, and let golden hour unfold – PIKRO being one of those places to be for drinks and bites, where time seems to pass almost unnoticed.
In the evening, make your way up to Chora, the island’s main village. Dress up a little, wander through its narrow streets, and head towards the Venetian castle for sunset. From here, the views open up over the coastline, with a sense of stillness that defines the island.
For dinner, Tony’s Pizza has become something of a ritual. There’s almost always a wait, but that’s part of the experience – order a drink, lean into the moment, and enjoy the slow rhythm of the evening as people gather, talk, and linger.
If you still have room for something sweet, make your way downstairs to Fossa for some of their homemade sweets. The best on the island, if you ask us. Also a great spot during the day!
Villages to wander
Kythira’s villages are scattered across the island, each with its own quiet character.
Chora
Whitewashed, elegant, and crowned by its Venetian castle, Chora is where the evenings are elegant and most alive.
Kapsali
Seaside and easygoing, where days stretch into evenings without needing to move far.
Avlemonas
Small, picturesque, and built around natural sea pools, offering one of the island’s most unique settings.
Mylopotamos
Lush and green, known for its waterfalls and traditional charm, a completely different side of the island.
Potamos
A more local, lived-in village, especially vibrant on market days, offering a glimpse into everyday island life.

Getting to Kythira:
- Fly: Domestic flights connect Kythira with Athens via Athens International Airport
- Ferry: Boats from Gythio, Neapoli (Peloponnese) and Athens.

Length of stay & best season:
- Ideal stay: 4-5 days, but it can easily stretch to a week plus if you really feel like resting and visiting your favorite places a couple of times.
- Best season: Summer
