Why it made our list: Rooms full of colour, craft and personality, in a part of Athens that still belongs to the people who live there. This one’s a find.
At a Glance
A new building in what was once the ancient potters’ quarter, this explains everything about Loom’s obsession with ceramics. The facade is custom terracotta lattice brick, impossible to walk past without looking. Inside there are cobalt headboards, terracotta cabinetry, brass sinks, mustard chairs and handmade pottery on every shelf. Designed by four architects, all women; every detail considered, nothing left to chance.
There are eleven rooms, most with balconies and sunbathed loft suites with skylights. The neighbourhood is the real draw: bars, galleries and tavernas spilling onto the pavement. Technopolis next door, hosts concerts and exhibitions, while Kerameikos archaeological site is a short walk, and the Acropolis fifteen minutes on foot through streets that feel nothing like the tourist centre. The staff know the area well and will point you in the right direction.
Our Take: Kerameikos is the Athens many visitors miss. Loom makes a strong case for basing yourself there.
