AMOH

Rhodes Island, Greece

Why it made our list: AMOH is homa backwards, Greek for earth, and the hotel earns the name. Built into the peninsula, beside the quarry that once built Lindos, with a spa, four restaurants and two private beaches of its own. On Rhodes, this is where we send you.

At a Glance

A peninsula on the southeast coast of Rhodes, Aegean on both sides, sunrise over one flank and sunset on the other. In Rhodian myth, this is where the sun god Helios fell for the sea nymph Rhode and the island rose from the water to meet them. AMOH has built itself into that story. 195 rooms and suites named after Helios and his family, spread low across the headland in timber, linen, and stone the colour of the land.

Below the resort, the ancient quarry is carved into the shoreline, staircases cut into the rock, old loading ramps where ships once waited to carry Rhodian stone to Lindos. A Luxury Collection hotel with a setting that feels closer to archaeology than architecture.

Rhodes is a big island with a mixed reputation, and AMOH is the answer for anyone who has wanted a reason to come and still stay above it all. Two pools, two private beaches, a spa and a 24-hour gym, four restaurants and a patisserie that could keep you on the peninsula for a week. For those who want more than Helios all day, the weekly calendar runs from olive tastings in the grove to sunset aperitivo at the firepit. Lindos is ten minutes down the coast for the Acropolis and the sunset light. The rest of the island rewards the effort, Monolithos Castle perched above the sea, the Valley of the Butterflies inland, and small coves tucked along the less-travelled stretches.

The Filita Gist: Four restaurants, two beaches, a spa, a patisserie and a cigar lounge, all on a peninsula of its own, with Lindos ten minutes away. Consider it optional.
