The Windmill

Kimolos Island, Greece

Why it made our list: Kimolos is one of the last Cycladic islands that still feels like the Cyclades used to. The Windmill is the reason to stay the night instead of taking the ferry back to Milos.

At a Glance

A working grain mill until 1930, known locally as “O Mylos tou Giatrou”, the Doctors’ Windmill, after the family of physicians who lived here for two generations. The restoration kept the bones: 1.40-metre stone walls, the cylindrical tower, the low-slung annexes that once housed livestock. Inside, whitewashed surfaces, built-in beds, earthy tones. Five rooms, each different, each named. Nothing pretending to be something it isn’t.

The property sits on a hillside between Psathi port and Chorio, the island’s only village. Breakfast runs until noon at the Kimolos Breeze terrace, cooked to order, with local pies and fresh fruit. In the evenings, the same terrace becomes a cocktail bar with Polyaigos lit up across the water. There is no pool, no restaurant for dinner, and no reason to stay put. Kimolos is small enough to know in a few days, and the team here will point you in the right direction.

Our Take:  Small, simple and completely of its island. No pool, no fuss. Book it for the terrace, the views and the pace.

Rooms We Love

Strogilo

The largest room, split over two levels and connected by an internal stone staircase. Double bed on the ground floor, queen upstairs, each with its own entrance. The terrace is generous. If you’re travelling as a couple and want space, or as a small group, this is the one. 30 sqm.

Apagio

A double bed, a living area with two sofa beds, and a terrace with built-in loungers facing the port and Polyaigos. Works well for couples who like a sitting area, or for a family with two older children who don’t mind close quarters. 28 sqm

Dining

Kimolos Breeze Café & Bar:  Breakfast is served from 8 am to noon on the panoramic terrace or delivered to your room. Cooked to order: omelettes, local cheese and spinach pies, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice. In the evenings, cocktails, wine and light snacks.

Getting Here:

Kimolos is reached by a short ferry from Pollonia, Milos, approximately 20–30 minutes.

Milos has a domestic airport with daily connections to Athens.

Direct ferries also run from Piraeus to Kimolos (approximately 3.5–8.5 hours depending on the service).

Connects well with:

Milos Island – all connections to other islands and Athens made through Milos port or Airport
